Demographic Segmentation

Demographic Segmentation

Demographic Segmentation is used in media marketing. It is one of the most basic forms of identification for target audiences and way of grouping an audience defines them which will classify the audience into age, gender, race and other categories.

It is broken into bands depending on people jobs and status.

Here is a table of the demographic segmentation
It is a very simplistic way as it assumes that everyone in a very broad group has the same attitude.

THE FOUR Cs

Or we call it s " Psychographic Segmentation table".
The 4Cs categorise people in terms of their aspirations. this is still one of the most popular ways of profiling audiences in terms of wants and needs

Why do we need to use the 4 Cs?
  • It is more useful than the ABC1 categorisation (not simple demographics)
  • It acknowledges the global nature of media audiences

They are divided into 7 types of consumer

The 4 main categories are (MARS)

  • Mainstreams
  • Aspirers
  • Reformers
  • Succeeders

Other categories can be added to (ERS)

  • Explorers
  • Resigned
  • Strugglers

Psychographic segmentation can be categorised by;

THE FOUR Cs
To move away from these very broad audience groups that are difficult to target, market researchers started to categorise audiences in terms of needs and motivation rather than a simple demographic segmentation
