Flashbacks, Flash-forwards, Foreshadowing

Flashbacks

Flashbacks answer questions that are integral to understanding the characters. it depicts the subjective experience of a character by showing a memory of a previous event and they are often used to "resolve an enigma" in the film.

Flashforwards

Flashforward is a scene that temporarily takes the narrative forward in time from the current point of the story in literature, film, television and other media.

Flashforward is quite similar to foreshadowing, in which future events are not shown but rather implicitly hinted at.

Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing often appears at the beginning of a story, or a chapter, and helps the reader to develop expectations and the upcoming events. Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.
